Toki Pounamu Film Festival

Toki Pounamu Film Festival

On the 14th of November 2019 we went to the Toki Pounamu Film Festival. This film festival is where the hosts give the schools a topic and they have to make a film about that topic and it can only be  2 to 3 minutes long. This is the first time they have hosted it in Greymouth and the first time Karoro School have ever entered or went to it.  It was great, there lots of films and lots of schools entered and went from around the West Coast. My favourite film was the first one that they showed because the editing was really good and it was different to all the other films at the festival. This film was about a pretend robbery. They had really good time lapse when they were switching between scenes and they also had slow motion pieces  and props in their film. It was also really funny and gets its message through to you using humor and  acting. I really enjoyed the film’ it was funny and had good editing and really clear sound which I found some of the other films sound was not good. I also liked the way that at the first part of their film was like a news report and how they had people that were in different places at their school. They also changed their voices to fit into their character. I also liked their costumes because no other group used costumes. Over all I really enjoy going to the Toki Pounamu Film Festival.

Weta information report - term

This is a peace of writing I did for are mini beats topic when we were learning about weta we had to research weta and the then write a information report.

click here for to see Wētā Information Report - Success Criteria
The weird and wonderful world of weta The weird and wonderful world of weta

What is a weta?

Weta are native pepeke(insects) to NZ/New Zealand.Weta are invertebrates and they have an exoskeleton. An invertebrate is an animal or pepeke  that has a skeleton on the outside of its body and  no spine. Weta are cold blooded and lay eggs. They have six legs and 2 antennae. Weta may be creepy but they are actually ngahau(interesting) creatures.

Where do weta live?
Where a weta lives depends on the type of weta. The common tree weta  lives in rotten wood or they live in tree holes. sometimes Weta live in peoples firewood piles and tree weta are the only weta that live in groups. all other weta live alone . The Cave Weta are Not as common as tree weta. cave weta can live in seaside caves or they can live in tunnels or hollow tree trunks or under houses. The giant weta are kind of rare because they only live on Island sanctuaries. The rare ground weta live in burrows in the ground. The tusked weta are extremely rare and are ground dwelling.

What do weta eat?
What a weta eats  depends on the type of weta.  tree weta and giant weta  are mostly herbivorous. They enjoy leaves, lichen, seed heads, and fruit flowers. Tusked and ground weta are mostly carnivores and  eat small invertebrates, worms and snails. Cave weta are omnivores and eat Fungi, leaves, plants, other insects and dead animal remains. All weta love carrots so if you ever are trying to make a weta a home, a way to attract them is to put a carrot in and see what happens.

How do weta get their food?

How A weta gets its food depends on the type of weta and what it eats. The tree and giant weta climb trees to get their food. since they are  mostly herbivorous they don't have to kill or hunt to get their food. Since Cave weta are omnivores sometimes they have to hunt to get their food and sometimes they just have to search. Tusked and ground weta, since they are mostly carnivores they have to hunt to find their food and after they have found it they have to kill it!

How do weta Reproduce?

Female and male weta will mate in spring. 2 male will fight for a female. When autumn comes  the female will they her eggs in the soil or rotten wood. THen the next year during spring the eggs will hatch. after a period of time the babies will shed their skin and start to grow into adult weta.

What do wetas do to socialise?
In the summer weta mate to lay eggs. The  weta rub their legs together and make a chirping sound to attract other weta. tree weta are the only type of weta that live in a group. all other weta live alone.

What are weta threats?

Weta now have many threats. before humans came they only had a few. but now they have a lot more Like cats, rats, stoats,  poison from humans. They also still have got their natural threats like birds and tuatara.

The end

Weta may be ugly and scary at times but if they die out then we’re in trouble but if we die out then the weta would be fine. By jordyn

Abandoned Places

 Abandoned Places Writing

Our learning goals are to:
-write a description, using powerful words and phrases
-include some Te Reo Māori
-carefully check that our sentences make sense and have correct punctuation and spelling.

THE ABANDONED CITY
I got out of my pūngene (sleeping bag). I got out of my tent not knowing the time, so I looked at the sky to try and find out the time,  but the sky is covered in grey and black cloud. I had no idea where I was, which was weird because I swear I put my tent in a different place. I was in the middle of the dark Jungle exploring to see what I could find and there was no one around that I could see so I yell out Hello! No one answers.

The air smells like old Wet towels.  I walk forward and see a humongous tree so I decide to climb it to try to see where I am. So I start to climb. When I am halfway up my shoulders start to get sore from all the climbing so I stop and take a break. I look out and see if I can see anything and when I look out I see a city but the whole city has been burnt down.

All the buildings were light grey and others dark grey and some were charcoal black. I climb back down as fast as I can. When I'm at the bottom of the tree I sprint to the first building but I stop at the door and I look at the rusted burnt handle. Did I dare to go in. Then I start to matihe(sneeze). so I look around, the only thing I am allergic to are Pandas and there is nothing around me but trees and burnt buildings so I touch the Handle. It’s covered in dust. That must be what I was matihe(sneezed) about.

Come on you can do this I say to myself. I opened the door and looked around. I think this must have been an apartment building so I keep walking and see some stairs. I go up the stairs and there are some doors and I open the first one and then I start matihe(sneezing) like crazy,.I quickly shut the door and then I Stop matihe(sneezing).. I go to the next door and before I open it I sniff,. All I can smell is a dead smell. Then I look at my hands, they are covered in ash and an orange rusty colour. I look at the burnt  door then dare myself to open it.

Behind me I see something  move. Then I go as quiet as a mouse.. I see a shadow, so I quickly run  Into the room. Then I see to kurauri(dark red) eyes.  I turn around as quickly as I can and try to leave but the door is stuck. Then I Start to  matihe(sneeze) Ocho, ocho, ocho, ocho. The sun Shines through a hole in the wall and there is a Giant panda with teeth. as sharp as a Lions and claws bigger than hands. I can't see anything. I'm matihe(sneezing) too much. Then the Giant Panda bit  Off my leg!! then I saw a bright light and …

My Marae Recount:)

    Marae camp

On May the 1st and 2nd, 2019, ruma rima, ruma whitu, teachers and some parent helpers went to the Arahura Marae to learn about the marae and it’s history.

The River
MY  first favorite thing was going down to the river to look for Pounamu. When we got down to the River Jerry gave us some tips on how to find pounamu. He said not to look for green which is what we were all planning on doing because we were looking for Pounamu and Pounamu is green. Then he said that we should look for a white pasty colour. Then we were off. Me porsha and Ayah walked along the river till we come to sand  and stone. The sand was so smooth and metallic. Porsha and Ayah played with the special sand while I looked for Pounamu In the river. I found a piece of serpentine Pounamu and gave it to Porsha since you are supposed to give your first piece of Pounamu to someone. Then we had a sculpture competition and Jerry judged it. There were 3 winners and then we went back to the marae.

Afternoon Activities
In the evening we had some activities that we we chose at school. I chose soap carving and tukutuku panels. I did soap carving first with Ms Barrow. She gave some soap and a Kebab stick, then pot out some laminated pieces of paper with some cool designs. I chose koru designs and carved them in. Then I started to carve it into a soap boat. There was loads of soap shavings. Ayah was on the other end of the and she had a really big pile of shavings. Me Ilish and Ryan tried to beat her pile of shavings. When we Finally did we had to go to are next evening rotation. My next evening rotation was Tukutuku panels with Mrs Glue. Riley, Alasker, Harper, and Billie were there. Mrs Glue showed us how to do it and then we were off. Riley kept on saying weird stuff and continuously talking and he wouldn't stop no matter what And it kept on messing up his tukutuku panels and needing Mrs Glue help. At one point I missed out because I was laughing too hard at what Riley was saying but Mrs Glue fixed it. The tukutuku panels were fun and a new experience.

The stories behind the beautiful carvings

The first sight you see when you walk into marae is the Gorgeous carvings being displayed up on the walls and each of those carvings has a story and all their stories are important to different tribes. We were sitting in the marae and Miss Ireland was reading the story about Poutini and Waitaiki.  As were waiting for Jerry to come. Jerry came and we finished the story. Then we went outside to learn about all the carvings on the outside of the marae. First he said that the tekoteko was the only one in New Zealand made out of Pounamu which was pretty Amazing! He said that on the left was Waitaiki and that was the women's side and on the wall there was the women's moko kauae. And on the right was Poutini and on the back wall was the full face moko. He said that the women stand on the women's side and men on the men’s side. Then we went into the marae to see the carvings inside that looked like they took 100,000,000,000,000,000,000 years to do and we split into our classes and got to chose 2 caving per for Jerry to tell us about. My class chose two. The first story that went with the carving we chose first was back when the wars for pounamu were still going and 10 people from the East Coast where planning an attack to win Pounamu but there was a guy from the tribe that they were planning an attack on and he had some magic. He knew that the war party were coming to attack and that night he  made a big storm and flipped all the Canoes of his enemies and all those that made it to land were killed because there were people waiting on land and then 3 days after the war one of the warriors from the East Coast came to bring back the heads of his chiefs that had died. He had to take back the chiefs head because they were sacred and he wanted to take them back home for burial. Personal comment
The thing I most enjoyed was that I had the chance to go to a marae it was amazing and thanks to everyone that helped :)
